It occurs to me that maybe constant economic growth isn’t necessarily a great thing. I don’t mean stagnation. I mean, when you get in a car, do you just slam on the accelerator until you get where you’re going? That would, uh, result in a boom (car crash) and bust (your head all over the windshield). No, most of the time you cruise, sometimes you accelerate, sometimes slow down, occasionally go in reverse (but not very long). When you jam on the accelerator, the slow downs come sharply and unexpectedly and lead to sudden crashes (apparently out of nowhere).
