You’ll probably just want to skip down to the picture of a kitty at the end. I’m going to wax nostalgic about deep nerd stuff in the meantime.

Arch Linux – it ain’t yer grandma’s Ubuntu. Text-based installer. Configuration via text files. Does not come with gigabytes of crap (the ISO file is under 400 meg). Wont install a bunch of extra crap unless you ask it to, and still that extra crap upon install time is included in the <400 meg. The installer isn't completely hardcore - it does walk you through things rather nicely unless you really wanna cowgirl up and do things by hand. I mean, unlike Slackware it actually walks you through partitioning your hard drive. Slack still says "good luck with fdisk and figuring out where what and how to mount your shit." You *can* do that, the option is there if you wanna St. George and the Dragon your way through things.

You wont find all of Gnome and KDE and every possible little widget and doodad stuffed into your machine with a bunch of automated crap trying to run things for you. You wont find a system of configuration files that's completely divergent from the last 50 years of UNIX development that requires you to google to find out where anything is, only to have it re-written later by some tool that hasn't broken yet. You will find a BSD-ish configuration system that fits like a nice old pair of shoes (the kind you haven't worn holes in yet). A wiki on their website that contains useful information. Instructions that work.

You do have to enable a lot of stuff - like the networking, the package manager (cutely named 'pacman') repositories, etc before you're up and running. But, on the other hand, you're not running a bunch of crap you don't need by default, and you choose which repositories you use. You do have to cowboy your way through the configs with vi until you get pacman chomping powerpills and get vim installed (or you can use nano if you're still in gradeschool), but when you're done you got a smile on your face and find yourself flexing at your computer because you haven't installed an OS without mouseclicks in years. Even getting X11 installed and configged isn't too much of a hassle, but does require text editing and wiki-searching. And then in all comes together and you've got a working netbook again. Now, to get the LAMP back up and all my test sites rockin again....

Anyway, here’s your promised pussy:

Thanks for sticking with/skipping this far!

Memristors are amazing. They can work with CMOS (your regular computer chips) and different scales, i.e. they can mix 100nm memristors with 45nm CMOS structures (intend to shrink to 5nm memristors with 45nm CMOS, as they are so awesome CMOS doesn’t really need to change any further to accommodate their awesomeness-imbuing powers), they can tolerate up to 20% failure rate. It’s damned near magic they way they work -- swapping oxygen atoms back and forth between a layer of TiO2 and TiO by changing voltage slighty, changing it’s resistive properties. The change is about .3nm thickness to either layer, depending on which way the voltage goes. And it will be much more efficient than regular transistor based computronics, you should be able to pull ten resistors out of a given design and replace them with one memristor. And as they’ll be able to pair 5nm memristors with 45nm CMOS, that means those ten resistors will actually hold enough space to put about 90 memristors. Holy crap, amirite? That’s a factor of 900X. Shittin your pants yet? This next decade is going to blow your mind.

Further reading here. Warning: deep nerd.

I never want to hear the “but if it’s the future, where’s my jetpack” argument ever again.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here.

But.

Jetpacks have no practical application. They were only hailed as futuristic because they LOOK REALLY FUCKING COOL.

When you think about the practical applications, however, the amount of fuel it would take you to get anywhere vs. the amount of stuff you could take with you (you, the jetpack, contents of your pockets…?) vs. well, you know, the physics of strapping fucking rockets to your back. The amount of computer control needed to not make that rocket spin out of control and park your face into the nearest solid object.

So lets keep jetpacks out of our discussions on living in the future. Yes, we will eventually have them. Why? Because they look REALLY FUCKING COOL. However, they’ll be about as practical as those wingsuits some nuts enjoy skimming over mountains in, at least for a fairly long while. Who knows, we may invent an electromagnetic gravition reversal device first, which overcomes a lot of the problems associated with jets and the possibility of aiming them straight into the ground with your face being the hammer’s head in that particular physics reaction. We already have maglev trains so the possibility definitely exists, the devil is just in the details. Every day we probe further the mysteries of our universe. Science never sleeps, and the computerization of science just further repels the veil of slumber.

So fuck jets and fuck jetpacks. That’s 20th century technology. With an electromagnetic solution we wont have to worry about burning shit up so backpacks and stuff are no problem. Power is starting to go wireless, so batteries may not be much of an issue, tho at first this sorta technology would probably be limited to sporting arenas supplying a power and electromagnetic field, or special roads that have embedded grids, assuming such technology proved useful for transportation (hurray flying cars? they never said jet cars so magnetic gravity resistance counts as flying cars still, just not jetsonian free-flyers). Advances in superconducting materials and techniques will eventually make this sorta problem trivial should it prove useful to us, but you never know when a game changer is going to come along and make this sorta shit seem as useless and antiquated as the idea of a jetpack now is to some of us.

The next time the world looks mundane, think this to yourself: “My computer has billions of transistors in an area the size of my pinky nail. My phone is hundred or thousands of times faster than the moon-shot computer. People are starting to travel to space for FUN.”

Okay? So here’s your fucking jetpack sun. $86,000 out the door.

And the only thing I love more than someone applying science to coffee is actually drinkin the stuff. Wishing I could drink the cup I made earlier this evening but it is too early in the night, currently.

I brew Vietnamese style, and I use 4 tablespoons of beans, medium-fine ground (about ten seconds in my shitgrinder) to brew 4-6 oz of liquid (never measured exactly). It takes a bit of cream to get it to change color.

The coffee that the physics major above is describing is called “The Black Blood of the Earth.” And I really wanna try some.

edit: Now I reaaaaaaally wanna try it:

Phil: “Okay, what the bad news?”
Chemist: “There was so much caffeine it oversaturated the detector and probably blew the calibration.”
P: “Crap. What’s the good news?”
C (jumping up and down with glee): “There was so much caffeine it oversaturated the detector and probably blew the calibration!”

propagating the myth that shaking your Polaroid makes it develop faster just doesn’t belong in the future. Seriously though, unless you’re waiting for processing time, why do you want to wait and watch your digital image slowly appear. Is waiting to see the output of might-as-well-be-instantaneous (if you can shake it to make it go faster…) processing some sort of mental luxury I just don’t understand?

At the Neural Information Processing Systems conference (NIPS 2009), we show the progress we have made. We demonstrate a detector that has learned to spot cars by looking at example pictures. It was trained with adiabatic quantum optimization using a D-Wave C4 Chimera chip. There are still many open questions but in our experiments we observed that this detector performs better than those we had trained using classical solvers running on the computers we have in our data centers today. Besides progress in engineering synthetic intelligence we hope that improved mastery of quantum computing will also increase our appreciation for the structure of reality as described by the laws of quantum physics.

Can I just say it’s about to start gettin crazy up in this hizzy we call the Earth? How much longer will it be until a Google datacenter or the Google network is a sentient being? Google is moving aggressively onto each continent, setting up it’s own fiber networks, worming its way towards our pockets… Google is setting themselves up to be humanity’s uberbrain. The scope, scale and cleverness of their plans continues to amaze me. They may be evil but at least they’re my kind of evil.

Dear Microsoft,

Buy this company. Buy it now. Buy it for a beelyon dollars if you have to. Give a free copy to all Windows 7 installs, downloadable over Windows Update. Sit back, watch Apple cry in the corner.

Then the real strategy begins. Put the same thing on Xbox. Start a 3d widget/app store – this part is especially important – really get on the ones with virtual stock displays so you can watch bar graphs rise and fall in real-time 3d, or for server admins to have little morphing 3d representations of the health of their networks chilling in the corner where they can keep an eye on things. Wedge it into the business atmosphere as being able to provide representational situational data for their applications/monitoring systems.

Allow this program to be further advanced and support dynamic lighting, particle effects, etc. Sky’s the limit, the desktop is now a physics toy. You will drive the sales of touch screen devices, the manufacturers will be *blanking* your *blanks* in gratitude (I have no idea what corporations do for each other? Sending their flowers?).

Think of the commercials. It will be glorious. “Yeah. Mac – OS it’s pretty. It’s shiny. But can it do this?” *high speed montage of icons flying, blowing up when they hit the recycle bin in a shower of sparks, etc etc* (Get some music by Air or Kraftwerk) “I’m a PC” *cut to a shot of mac boy crying in the shower trying to scrub himself clean.*
