It just occurred to me that Bush took office in one of the best times in recent American history, and Obama is taking office in one of the worst. What a difference eight years can make. Hopefully history wont fuck Obama the man over as it has for so many. I would settle for history fucking Obama the presidency over, as these current crises are more than any sane man should want to tackle, and could crush even the mightiest. But so many great fighters for American freedom have been taken early – Lincoln, King, Kennedy, countless American soldiers – any president paints himself as the prime target for anti-government aggression, regardless of his policies or effectiveness.

And, unfortunately, the historical nature of Obama paints a target twice as large – every American and most citizens of the world with passing familiarity with American history know the names of Lincoln and Kennedy – and also the name of their assassinators. 2000 years later, we still know the names of the guy who sold out Jesus and the men who killed him, we still know the name of he who took Julius Ceasar’s life. The ten seconds it takes to kill a historical figure is the quickest route to immortal infamy one can imagine. My only consolation is that most would-be assassins are pretty dumb, so most plots get foiled before they come to fruition (Clinton had two plots against him), or they fuck up the the plan (Reagan).
