My most popular flickr so far

Out of nowhere it jumped into the number one spot, doubling the second most popular photo (the girl giving the requisite finger that all teenagers must).

It weird – a lot of the images I really like aren’t that preferred on Flickr, and some I don’t much care for personally seem to rocket into the (relative) stratosphere of popularity.

The image above is what a microprocessor looks like without the packaging – the bare silicon surface is photographed, using a kind of microscopy that uses the principle of constructive light-wave interference to highlight the contrast of feature edges on an otherwise featureless surface. In normal light microscopy, the surface would be mostly greenish and not very interesting. All of the functional part of the processor are within a micron or two of the surface. At the heart of the newest chips, there are wires that are microscopic in comparison to the already microscopic wires you see at the surface of this chip – they are up to 1000 times smaller than the smallest features we see here.
