Coming home to Roost

Fourteen years after the execution of the Nigerian author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa by Nigeria’s former military regime, Royal Dutch Shell will appear before a federal court in New York to answer charges of crimes against humanity in connection with his death.

Oil companies are being sued on charges of environmental damage, collusion with repressive governments and contributing to human rights abuses, among others.

And these legal challenges are just the latest tests for an industry increasingly hard pressed to find new sources of petroleum.

A century of American corporate colonialism is coming home to roost. We have ruined vast areas of the world, deprived the native inhabitants of their resources for our leisure, and have patted ourselves on the back for a job well done this whole time. Of course, we own all the biggest guns and are busy building better ones as we speak to the tune of three quarters of a trillion dollars every year, so no one’s said much. But that oil keeps our military movin… and it’s starting to run out. When that source of cheap, easy energy is gone, well, then what’s our extreme Hummer drivin barrel-rollin rockin-out with their cockens-out military gonna do?

These companies, having polluted and murdered their way through the riches of the third world, now claim they need vast areas of our own country to ruin in search of more oil to pollute our skies with even further. When is enough going to be enough?

Plastics are wonderful, fairly necessary to modern life at this stage but will be replaced at some point. Also recyclable a much better use for oil than energy. If the oil companies stopped expansion and used that money and their windfall profits to invest in solar/wind/etc they’d be ready to convert by the time their current operations went dry.
