Well, hey, they had a revolution 30 years ago, against the puppet dictator we installed. Ahmadinejad is claiming victory, allegedly far against the way the vote went… so they might do it again. Allegations of election fraud, vote tampering… you know, the same kind of thing that goes on in America, just no one is pissed off enough to care because we’re comfortable in our 200+ year old ‘democracy’ – their’s is less than a century old and has been fucked with by outside influences for most of that time (because we want their oil, of course) so they’re a little more sensitive, and have taken to the streets en mass as they feel they have been cheated out of their rights.
They’re still fighting for rights over there, a curious mix of rapidly westernizing population controlled by an Islamic government at odds with the will of the people, nominally a democracy. We here in America have rights and are fighting to get our rights taken away (remember the 4th amendment to the Constitution? The Congress stripped that away from us thanks to G.W. Bush’s Patriot Act.) thanks to a fear of terrorism. We say Iran sponsors terrorism, but WE are the only ones who have taken away freedoms from our citizens in the name of anti-terrorism. We say Iran sponsors terrorism, but WE overthrew their government. The kidnapping during the 1979 Islamic revolution? A response to the U.S. overthrowing their government.
Lets face it folks, when WE fought for OUR independence and freedom, WE were the terrorists to England’s well-established system of governance. We were the insurrection, we were the flouters of tradition.
We have no problem pointing fingers. We barely remember the last 8 years and all that they wrought, let alone the past 50, 100, 200 years of our own struggles for and against tyranny.
